Junior Sailors at the Melges 32 Gold Cup

At Sail22 we strongly support Junior sailors and keeping them excited about sailing. What a better way to do just that then to take them out on a Melges 32 with some of the best sailors in the world? We think it's great that the Melges 32 Gold Cup has integrated a "take a Junior racing day" from its inception. Each year a Junior sailor from the Lauderdale Yacht Club sails with each team on the Saturday of the event. We're not sure who actually has more fun...the teams or the kids based on the comments we heard from both groups! The day started off with light air and ended with some great breeze to give the kids a taste of everything the Melges 32 can do. Here are some shots from the Junior Day from this year's event. Our full gallery of the Juniors hiking hard and learning from the best can be found here.

Ramrod Wins the 2009 Melges 32 Gold Cup

Rod Jabin's Ramrod with Gavin Brady as tactician and crew of Mike Beasley, Joe Gibson, Ray Wulff, Ted Kaczmarski, Kate Torgerson won the Melges 32 Gold Cup 2009. This is the team's first one-design regatta after Rod took delivery of his new boat in June. The team is all made up of local sailors from Annapolis, Maryland. Much of the team comes from Rod's Farr 40 Ramrod team and they are all having a blast figuring out the Melges 32.

Joe Wood's Red from Torquay, UK was a very close second overall and Andy Lovell's New Orleans based Rougarou was third. John Taylor's Ninkasi was one point behind Rougarou and Kip Meadow's RoXanne finished fifth overall.

The final day of racing started with a light first race, which quickly shifted at the first leeward mark rounding and the breeze built to 15-20 knots. The breeze stayed up through the next two races of the day. Dalton DeVoss's Delta won the first race of the day, RoXanne won the second race and Jeff Ecklund's Star scored the third race of the day.

Our entire photo gallery can be seen on Sail22Photography.com. Full results are posted on YachtScoring.com and full press releases from the class can be viewed on the Melges 32 Class website.

Melges 32 Gold Cup Day 2 Report

Kip Meadow's RoXanne is the new leader after two more races on Day 2 of the Melges 32 Gold Cup. Ramrod was granted redress for race 1 of the day after a collision with Dark 'N Stormy. Johnny Lovell's Rougarou slid to third place overall and John Taylor's Ninkasi is in fourth. Jason's Carroll and his team on Argo moved into fifth. Racing was called for the day after two races as the breeze was shifty and a tornado warning was in effect.

Photos from Day 2 are posted here and full updates from the race course can be found at www.sailingupdates.com. Full results are available here. We are at the Bahia Mar with the Sail22Gear.com Henri Lloyd Mobile Store open before and after racing. Swing by for special regatta discounts!

Melges 32 Gold Cup

Melges 24 Gold Cup

Ed is down in Ft. Lauderdale for the Melges 32 Gold Cup.  He brought the Etchells down for the season and the Jaguar Cup next weekend and decided to stick around and work with the Protector guys who are supporting the event with the new and very cool 38’.  Check out the photos page for some great pics.  The event has some pretty tough competition and each race winner was punched out pretty good.  Look at the scores at melges32.com to see how amazingly close things are.  Ed thinks there are more bowchicks at this event than any other class.  See photo above of Star bowchick Lindsey Bartel.  Ed will try to give an update tomorrow before he jumps back in the truck to drive back to Annapolis to grab the Sail22 box trailer and head back down to South Florida for the Etchells event.
