Charleston Race Week Day 2 Melges 24 Practice Photos

DSC_2217Since racing was abandoned for Day 2 of Charleston Race Week 2011 for all fleets, several teams gearing up for the Melges 24 Worlds in a few weeks in Corpus Christi, TX decided to head out for practice. After all, a big breeze day in Charleston doesn't even come close to a light air day in Corpus! Sail22 headed out with Ed driving while Becky took photos for the day thanks to Andrew from Protector and our sweet ride on the new Protector 25. The Full Photo Gallery from Day 2 of Charleston Race Week is now posted. Alec Cutler's Hedgehog (BER 1), Brian Porter's Full Throttle (USA 749), Alan Field's WTF (USA 811), Kristen Lane's Brick House (USA 812) and Bora Gulari's Air Force One / New England Ropes ~ West Marine (USA 820) were all out having a blast. Definitely a great day on the water!

Junior Sailors at the Melges 32 Gold Cup

At Sail22 we strongly support Junior sailors and keeping them excited about sailing. What a better way to do just that then to take them out on a Melges 32 with some of the best sailors in the world? We think it's great that the Melges 32 Gold Cup has integrated a "take a Junior racing day" from its inception. Each year a Junior sailor from the Lauderdale Yacht Club sails with each team on the Saturday of the event. We're not sure who actually has more fun...the teams or the kids based on the comments we heard from both groups! The day started off with light air and ended with some great breeze to give the kids a taste of everything the Melges 32 can do. Here are some shots from the Junior Day from this year's event. Our full gallery of the Juniors hiking hard and learning from the best can be found here.

Ramrod Wins the 2009 Melges 32 Gold Cup

Rod Jabin's Ramrod with Gavin Brady as tactician and crew of Mike Beasley, Joe Gibson, Ray Wulff, Ted Kaczmarski, Kate Torgerson won the Melges 32 Gold Cup 2009. This is the team's first one-design regatta after Rod took delivery of his new boat in June. The team is all made up of local sailors from Annapolis, Maryland. Much of the team comes from Rod's Farr 40 Ramrod team and they are all having a blast figuring out the Melges 32.

Joe Wood's Red from Torquay, UK was a very close second overall and Andy Lovell's New Orleans based Rougarou was third. John Taylor's Ninkasi was one point behind Rougarou and Kip Meadow's RoXanne finished fifth overall.

The final day of racing started with a light first race, which quickly shifted at the first leeward mark rounding and the breeze built to 15-20 knots. The breeze stayed up through the next two races of the day. Dalton DeVoss's Delta won the first race of the day, RoXanne won the second race and Jeff Ecklund's Star scored the third race of the day.

Our entire photo gallery can be seen on Full results are posted on and full press releases from the class can be viewed on the Melges 32 Class website.

Melges 32 Gold Cup Day 2 Report

Kip Meadow's RoXanne is the new leader after two more races on Day 2 of the Melges 32 Gold Cup. Ramrod was granted redress for race 1 of the day after a collision with Dark 'N Stormy. Johnny Lovell's Rougarou slid to third place overall and John Taylor's Ninkasi is in fourth. Jason's Carroll and his team on Argo moved into fifth. Racing was called for the day after two races as the breeze was shifty and a tornado warning was in effect.

Photos from Day 2 are posted here and full updates from the race course can be found at Full results are available here. We are at the Bahia Mar with the Henri Lloyd Mobile Store open before and after racing. Swing by for special regatta discounts!

Melges 32 Gold Cup: Rougarou Leads Day 1

Andy Lovell's Rougarou leads after 3 races on Day 1 of the 2009 Melges 32 Gold Cup hosted by Lauderdale Yacht Club. The day started off slowly with the fleet being under postponement until a nice breeze of 6-10 knots filled in later in the afternoon. Rod Jabin's Ramrod lead the first race of the day and finished third overall, while John Taylor's Ninkasi was second overall for the day with consistent sailing in all of the races.

We are out on the water giving real time updates at and photos from Day 1 of the Melges 32 Gold Cup can be found at here. Full results can be seen here.
